| About: | Rocket Up A Star 7″ with “Rocket Up A Star” on the A side and “Lonely Surfer” on the B side. Released by Blackjack Records in 1991. Zero Tolerance 7″ with “Zero Tolerance” on the A side and “Atom and Eve Bomb” on the B side. Released by Blackjack Records in 1992. “Lonely Surfer” is the signature ‘tune’ of the earliest set of Cactopus ‘songs’ and attempts to sonically mimic the experience of surfing alone in conditions beyond ones ability. “Rocket Up A Star” should have been a hit, especially since the talented drummer took over the primary vocal from the ‘singer’. Written at the close of the cold-war, the song reworks the consensus story of the Cuban Missile Crisis to a tale of phallic military libido. “Zero Tolerance/Atom and Eve Bomb” almost didn’t suck but were saved from being good songs by overtly topical politics. The recording was good though, especially the backwards-masked guitar on “Atom and Eve Bomb”. Lucky owners of one of the original 500 copies of the single were regaled with an insert requesting grassroots bookings for a summer 1991 BBQ tour. |
